Windows 8 is destroying the Microsoft ecosystem

Microsoft did not "keep the main thing, the main thing" when they developed Windows 8. They sacrificed their built-in domination of the desktop, needlessly, by forcing PC users to buy touch-screen PCs (which most desktop users don't want and are more expensive) and use a "Metro interface" which is confusing, and hardly user-friendly. Why Steve Ballmer hasn't been fired already, is the next question--

Windows: It's over | ZDNet: "Some people think I've put too much emphasis on Windows 8's dismal Metro interface for why Windows 8 has failed. I don't think so. This isn't a matter of judging a book by its cover; the user interface (UI) is everything for computer users. If the UI alienates users, you lose them. It's as simple as that . . . what do the numbers show? Not what do you want them to show, and not what would your faith in Microsoft would have you believe, but what do they actually add up to? The sum is that Microsoft is failing to hold on to the desktop market and that it has no impact whatsoever on smartphones and tablets. . . ."

As PC sales tank, what's Microsoft's Plan B? | Microsoft - CNET News: " . . . . Microsoft and its hardware partners, of course, don't have the option (to wait on the sidelines). And Windows 8, which was supposed to breathe new life into the PC business, appears so far to be sucking wind from it."

One App’s iOS Debacle Shows Dangers of Betting It All on Apple | MIT Technology Review: " . . .  More and more, smartphone makers and wireless carriers are realizing the importance of branching out to multiple operating systems (see “The Underdog Operating Systems Set to Shake Up the Smartphone Scene”). It can be difficlt to build an app simultaneously for several platforms–doing your best work on each platform requires different tools and techniques–but maybe in the absence of a good common development standard that’s what app developers need to do to protect themselves. As for AppGratis, Dawlat says it will forge ahead, writing, “even in dark times, every problem has a solution. And we are going to find one.”
